Porto travel guide

Porto Airport Guide

How to get from Porto Airport to the city centre, which option to choose, and what to know before your first ride into Porto.

Your first decision in Porto is simple: metro, taxi, app ride or transfer?

Porto Airport is well connected to the city, so arriving is usually straightforward. The best option depends on where you are staying, how much luggage you have, what time you land and how comfortable you are with public transport after a flight.

For most first-time visitors staying near a central metro station, the metro is the easiest budget-friendly choice. For late arrivals, heavy luggage or door-to-door comfort, a taxi, ride-hailing app or private transfer may make more sense.

Metro Line E

The simplest choice for many travellers. Take Line E from the airport and connect to central stations such as Trindade, Bolhão or other lines depending on where you are staying.

  • Good for light luggage
  • Good for central metro areas
  • Not ideal if your hotel is far from a station

Taxi or ride-hailing

A practical option if you arrive late, are tired after a long flight, have luggage, or are staying in an area where the metro would require several changes.

  • Door-to-door
  • Good with luggage
  • Traffic can affect the journey

Airport bus

Some bus routes connect the airport with parts of Porto and nearby areas. It can be useful if your accommodation is close to a route, but for most first visits the metro is easier to understand.

  • Useful for certain neighbourhoods
  • Check the route before choosing it
  • Less intuitive than the metro for first-timers

Private transfer

A good option if you want everything arranged in advance, especially for families, groups, late flights or travellers who prefer not to think about transport after landing.

  • Pre-booked
  • Easy for groups
  • Usually more expensive than public transport

Which airport transfer option should you choose?

Use this section as a quick decision guide.

Choose metro if...

You are travelling light, arriving during metro operating hours, and staying near Trindade, Bolhão, Aliados, Casa da Música, Campanhã or another metro-connected area.

Choose taxi or app ride if...

You have luggage, land late, are travelling with children, or your hotel is in a hilly or less direct part of the historic centre.

Choose bus if...

You already checked the route and it leaves you closer to your accommodation than the metro would.

Choose transfer if...

You want maximum simplicity, especially for a group, a special trip or an arrival when you do not want to navigate tickets and directions.

Step by step

Taking the metro from Porto Airport

After collecting your luggage, follow the signs for the metro. Buy or recharge an Andante ticket at the machines, choose the right zone for your journey, validate before boarding, and take Line E towards Porto.

Trindade is the most useful station for many visitors because it connects with several metro lines. If your final stop is not on Line E, check whether changing at Trindade makes sense.

Local tips

Small things that make your arrival easier

Porto is easy to reach, but these details can save you time and stress.

01

Check your hotel’s nearest metro station

Do this before landing. The best option is not always “city centre”, but the station closest to your accommodation.

02

Remember that Porto is hilly

A place can look close on the map and still be tiring with luggage because of climbs, stairs and stone pavements.

03

Keep your transport card

If you buy an Andante card, keep it during the trip. You may be able to recharge it for later journeys.

04

Arriving late? Simplify

After a late flight, a direct ride can be worth it, especially if it is your first time in the city.

05

Do not drive into the historic centre unless needed

A car can be useful for northern Portugal, but parking and narrow streets can make central Porto less relaxing.

06

Check official timetables before travelling

Transport schedules can change, especially at night, on holidays or during works and special events.
